Social Media Manager
The voice of Magic Bookmark online, written by someone who actually reads.
About us
YOMU is building a reading companion for people who love books.
Our flagship product, Magic Bookmark, is a spoiler-free companion that sits alongside whatever you are reading. Lost track of who a character is 300 pages in? Coming back to book four of a series after a year away? Magic Bookmark gives you recaps, character guides, and relationship maps up to exactly where you are, and not a word further. Our tagline says it best: spoil yourself, not the ending.
The principle we build on is that Magic Bookmark works alongside the book, never as a replacement for it. It works with the physical copy on your nightstand, the library paperback, the ebook, the audiobook. We are here to make reading less daunting and more rewarding, so people finish more books and start more series.
YOMU was founded by the team behind Outbrain (now Teads), which grew past $1B in annual revenue and went public on Nasdaq. We are a small, fast-moving group with the resources to build something real and the freedom to build it properly.
About the role
We are looking for someone to be the voice of Magic Bookmark online.
This is a hands-on, day-to-day social role. Our main channels are Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, and that is where you will live. You will also be showing up wherever else readers gather: BookTok and Bookstagram communities, Threads, Reddit, and the corners of the internet where people argue about series endings at 1am.
The most important thing to understand about this job: our voice is a reader's voice. We are not a brand that talks at book communities. We are part of them. The person in this seat should be able to write a comment on a stranger's post about a fantasy series and have it read as genuine enthusiasm, because it is. Everything else can be taught.
You will report directly to the founding team and have real ownership over how Magic Bookmark sounds in public.
The job can be done from anywhere, and we are happy to hire remotely. We also have an office in Hoboken, NJ, and you are welcome in it, full-time, hybrid, or whenever you feel like it. If you are in the Hoboken, Jersey City, or NYC area, that is a plus: it is easier to build a voice together in the same room, at least some of the time.
What you'll do
- Run our organic presence across our social channels: planning, writing, and publishing posts
- Reply to every comment and DM, and do it in a way that makes people want to reply back
- Engage outward: comment on other people's posts, join conversations in reading communities, build relationships with readers and creators
- Develop and maintain a consistent brand voice: warm, funny, book-obsessed, never salesy
- Spot what's working. Track what resonates, share what you learn, and adjust
- Surface trends, conversations, and creators worth our attention
- Flag what readers are telling us. Social is our closest listening post to the people we build for
What we're looking for
- Real comfort on social platforms, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok in particular. These are our main channels, so you should already use them naturally and know how each one works: what a good post looks like there, why the same idea needs a different shape on TikTok than on Instagram, what reads as cringe. Just as important, you should be at ease talking to people on these platforms, replying, commenting, joining a conversation without it feeling forced. We are not looking for a performer with a follower count. We are looking for someone who is fluent and comfortable in these spaces.
- Excellent written English. Also non-negotiable. You will be writing dozens of short pieces of copy a day in our voice, unsupervised. Whether that came from a degree or from years of writing online does not matter to us.
- A genuine love of books. Not a requirement on paper, but close to one in practice. This is the subject matter, all day. Tell us what you have read lately.
- Self-direction. We will give you the voice and the goals. You will be the one deciding what goes out on a Tuesday afternoon.
- Consistency. Social rewards showing up every day. The role needs someone who enjoys that rhythm rather than resents it.
- Good judgment. You will be speaking publicly for the company, often without checking first.
Nice to have
- Coursework or a degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or similar
- A track record of building engagement on an account of your own, or one you have run for someone else
- Based in the Hoboken, Jersey City, or NYC area and able to spend time in the office
- Comfort shooting and editing short-form video
- Familiarity with scheduling and analytics tools
- An existing presence in a book community: a Bookstagram, a BookTok, a Goodreads habit, a Discord you are active in
Why this role is worth it
You will be the first social hire on a product that readers get genuinely excited about, which makes this a much easier job than selling software. You will get direct access to the founders, real autonomy over a channel from day one, and a body of work you can point to for the rest of your career. And you will be paid to keep up with what everyone's reading.
How to apply
Send us:
- A short note on why this role appeals to you
- Links to any social accounts you are active on, yours or ones you have run. Optional, but helpful.
- The last three books you read, and one sentence on each
- Three sample social posts for Magic Bookmark, your choice of platform and angle. Show us the voice.
